The study of lung cancer was launched by the Japanese Society for Cancer of the Lung in 1970, and the first multicenter cooperative study started in 1981. The results of studies for lung cancer in Japan are summarized as follows. A study on lung cancer was conducted as one of the main study groups. The incidence of lung cancer in the past 15 years has declined as compared with that in the years 1950 to 1960 in the total population and in males. However, the incidence of adenocarcinoma and small cell carcinoma increased in the last 5 years. There was a trend toward an increase in the incidence of adenocarcinoma in males and in females. In 1985, 62 centers participated in the study. The first common results obtained were as follows. The most common form of lung cancer was SCLC, which accounted for 75% of all cases. The second most common type was SCC, which accounted for 14% of all cases. Adenocarcinoma was the third most common form, accounting for 12% of all cases. The distribution of stage was approximately as follows: 0-IA, 15%; IB, 24%; IIIA, 45%; and IIIB, 20%. The 5-year survival rates for these stages were, respectively, 34.8%, 18.1%, 5.1%, and 2.2%. There was no significant difference in survival rates between the bronchus and the lung. The incidence of lung cancer in former Japanese colonies is increasing, and the survival rate has declined. The most common form of lung cancer is SCC. Adenocarcinoma is the second most common form. Silicon Valley Getting Smaller - wallflower ====== achieving7 "Silicon Valley" is getting smaller? Really?
